| Older Adult Health & Well-being Programme 2008 (Older Adult) Ongoing Event, Ends 14/12/2008 Location: University of Glasgow Aimed at those 55 and over. We use a unique blend of exercise classes, courses and gym sessions to add variety and create interest for what we deliver. Our programme is also known for its great social side with time for tea and a chat after each session. Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace, to make the sessions as strenuous or easy as they wish, to achieve the numerous positive health benefits of exercising on a regular basis. | The Christmas Present Appeal Until 15th December (The Salvation Army) Ongoing Event, Ends 15/12/2008 Location: Cumbernauld and Kilsyth From Monday 3rd November to Friday, 15th December, The Salvation Army are asking you to ‘Give a Gift and Light Up a Life’. Members of the public are asked to drop off a new unwrapped gift for a child aged 0-16 years at Woolworths in the Antonine Centre or Superdrug in Phase 4 in Cumbernauld Shopping Centre. These gifts will be distributed to children and families in this area who otherwise might struggle at Christmas. | ||
| Treasured Places; Creative Connections between 4-29 November (Arts and Entertainment) Ongoing Event, Ends 29/11/2008 Location: LANARK LIBRARY An Exhibition of animation, art, poetry and photography created by community groups across the country during workshops by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS). | WEST SIDE STORY (Arts and Entertainment) Ongoing Event, Ends 29/11/2008 Location: Theatre Royal, Glasgow The 50th Anniversary of a musical landmark Tuesday 11th – Saturday 29th Nov West Side Story changed the course of musical theatre when it opened on Broadway in 1957. It remains one of the most successful stage shows of all time and sold out recently in Paris, Tokyo and Beijing as part of its fiftieth anniversary world tour. Alongside the stage musical, and the 1961 film version, which won ten Academy Awards. Based on Romeo and Juliet and focusing on social issues, the extended dance scenes, and the unforgettable songs, including ‘Maria’, ‘Tonight’, ‘Somewhere’, ‘America’, and ‘I Feel Pretty’, have become part of public consciousness the world over. Set on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, West Side Story explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs; one white the other Puerto Rican. When Tony falls in love with Maria, the sister of the rival gang’s leader, the feud takes on a new dimension, and as their love blossoms so begins a fatal journey overshadowed by violence and hatred. Joey McKneely has choreographed and directed extensively on Broadway and his credits include Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Hal Prince’s production of Whistle Down The Wind and Nicholas Hytner’s production of Twelfth Night. He staged and choreographed West Side Story at La Scala in Milan and has worked on many Hollywood movies. He choreographed The Boy From Oz, with Hugh Jackman in the leading role, before embarking on the direction and choreography for this production of West Side Story. This new version is the only modern day production which may call itself ‘The Original’ and is the only production currently licensed to tour internationally. This year, we aim to sell 3,500 real Christmas trees across the City. The profits from this venture will help us raise greatly needed funds for our work in Glasgow with vulnerable young people.
